Empty legs: fly private at a reduced price.

Every one-way flight leaves an aircraft in the wrong place: to get back to base, or to reach its next client, it has to fly empty. That flight is called an empty leg and can be booked at a reduced price.

Why they cost less

The airline would fly that route anyway: selling the empty seats lets it recover part of the cost. That's why market discounts usually run from 30 to 75% compared with a flight booked on request, and in some cases even more.

What you need to know

The route, date and time are those of the main flight and only change if that one does. It's always a one-way flight. If the main flight is moved or cancelled, the empty leg can be too: it's worth having a plan B.

Who it suits

Those with flexible dates, a weekend decided at the last minute, or a return with no fixed schedule. Less suited to an appointment that can't be moved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the time of an empty leg?

Usually not: the time is whenever the aircraft needs to reposition. Sometimes the operator can bring it forward or back slightly, depending on the main flight.

Can I bring luggage and pets?

Yes, within the aircraft's limits and subject to the rules of the airline operating the flight, just as on a normal private flight.

What happens if the empty leg is cancelled?

If the main flight changes, the empty leg can be moved or cancelled and you're refunded what you paid for it, under the airline's terms. We can offer you an alternative flight on request.

How much do you really save?

It depends on the route and how close the date is: market discounts compared with a flight booked on request usually run from 30 to 75%.

Rial Rent organises the flight for you as an intermediary: every flight is operated by an airline holding an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) under Regulation (EU) 965/2012. The name of the airline operating your flight is given to you before confirmation, as required by Regulation (EC) 2111/2005. Prices and times shown are estimates: the quote and written confirmation are binding.
